A wine of truly memorable flavour profile, marked tannins and abundant fruit. One for the ages. 2007 was the first vintage of this cuvée: we’ve blended the powerful Sagrantino variety with an outstanding Cabernet Franc and a hint of vibrant Kékfrankos.

This wine bearing the name ‘Franciscus’ is our way of paying homage to our ancestors. There have been seven generations in our family with the name ’Franciscus’, or later the Hungarian version ’Ferenc’.

Vinification: The different varieties were vinified separately. The Cabernet Franc and Kékfrankos fraction was fermented in steel tanks with gentle pumping over for 20-21 days, the Sagrantino was fermented in concrete vats with low intensity pumping over.

Following pressing and malolactic fermentation the Cabernet Franc was aged in 3 and 5 hl oak barrels, while the Sagrantino and Kékfrankos was aged in 10 hl large barrels for 2 years.

This is a wine that benefits a lot from bottle ageing, its hefty and marked tannins gradually integrate into the wine’s structure moving it towards a silky character, on the other hand tannins also add a lasting freshness to Franciscus.
