The Berliner Wine Trophy (BWT) is one of the largest immersion wine competitions in the world. The BWT has been accredited by the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) since 2004. Over 15,000 samples from 40 countries are judged in two rounds (winter and summer) during the year. As part of the strict rules, the scoring limits are set so that no more than 30 percent of the samples can be awarded a gold medal.
The evaluation of the 2022 winter phase batches and the publication of the results have recently been completed. The Berliner Wine Trophy is now the world’s largest wine competition, with more than 14,000 samples tasted and graded by experts and 2,385 medals awarded. This year, 100 Hungarian gold medals and two grand gold medals were awarded: the latter for Bodnár Winery’s 2018 6-puttonyos Tokaji aszú and Ikon Tulipán 2020.
Regarding wine regions, Tokaj is the most successful, with 17 gold medals and one grand gold. The second most successful is Szekszárd, with 17 gold medals, and Villány, with eight gold medals. The wine producers around Lake Balaton also did well. Badacsony won 6 gold medals, Balatonboglár 8 and Balatonfüred-Csopak 8. In addition, practically all our wine regions won gold medals.
The most successful wineries at the producer level are Schieber Winery, Szeleshát Winery, Szászi Birtok, Fodorvin Szentpéteri Borpince Kft, Pajzos Winery, and X-Vin. The most successful of our wineries are Vylyan (2 gold medals from the Villány wine region) and Eszterbauer Winery (2 gold medals from the Szekszárd wine region).
Hungarian chardonnays and furmints won 8-8 gold medals in the white varieties, and Hungarian olaszrizling (welschriesling) won seven gold medals. Among the international red varieties, eight merlots, four pinot noirs, and three cabernet sauvignons also won. Cabernet francs also did well, taking four golds, two of them Villány Franc.
The increasingly outstanding results in recent years show that Hungarian wines are gaining a stronger position in the German and European wine markets. In 2021, Hungarian wines received 191 gold and grand-gold awards, and in 2022 a total of 180 gold and grand-gold awards, compared to 30 or more per year in 2020 and the years before.
